“Golden Warranty” In Electronics Stores: Protection Or A Money Trap?

Consumer complaints over additional warranty packages in electronics stores have become more frequent in Azerbaijan, with some buyers saying the service is presented not as an option, but almost as a requirement.

Eyub Huseynov, chairman of the Free Consumers Union, said the term “golden warranty” has no legal basis in Azerbaijan’s consumer protection law.

According to him, buyers are charged extra under this label, but sellers often fail to honor the promised warranty terms afterward. He also said some retailers unjustifiably shorten the warranty period provided by the manufacturer.

Huseynov said the issue requires stronger oversight, as problems with electronics warranty services remain widespread.

At the same time, he noted that complaints are not filed against all retail chains. According to him, complaints about Irshad Telekom and the Smartfon store chain are almost nonexistent.

The expert urged consumers to carefully review warranty terms before paying for any additional service and to avoid agreeing to extra packages unless they clearly understand what protection they actually receive.
