Azerbaijan may increase the monthly age-based social allowance paid to citizens who are not eligible for a labor pension.
At present, citizens who reach 65 but do not have the required insurance record or pension capital receive 220 manats per month. The subsistence minimum for pensioners is 245 manats, which is higher than the current allowance.
Elderly citizens say the payment is often not enough to cover basic needs, especially medicine, utilities and other daily expenses.
MP Vugar Bayramov said proposals to increase the allowance have already been submitted to parliament. He said raising the payment for citizens who cannot qualify for a labor pension would be an appropriate social support measure.
Bayramov added that the issue could be reviewed after the necessary financial calculations are completed.
He also noted that Azerbaijan has adopted several social packages in recent years covering millions of pension and allowance recipients.
