A public debate is growing in Azerbaijan over the use of the country’s state emblem and other national symbols on commercial products and everyday household items.

The discussion was sparked by actor Ilkin Hasani, who objected to the placement of state symbols on souvenirs, packaging and various consumer goods.

In a social media post, Hasani argued that state symbols should not be treated merely as decorative elements and called for tighter oversight of how they are used.

The issue later drew a response from lawmaker Samir Valiyev, who described the matter as sensitive and said it required a balanced approach.

According to Valiyev, Azerbaijan’s national flag, state emblem and anthem are not ordinary graphic elements or commercial trademarks.

“They represent the independence, sovereignty and national identity of the state. Their use therefore requires particular respect,” he said.

The lawmaker said concerns over uncontrolled use were justified, especially when state symbols appear on disposable plates, doormats, packaging that will later be discarded or other products that may diminish their dignity.

At the same time, Valiyev said this did not mean that all commercial use of national symbols should be prohibited.

He noted that in many countries, national flags are widely used on souvenirs, sports clothing, badges and commemorative products.

The main requirement, he said, is that such use comply with the law and avoid any presentation that could be viewed as degrading, insulting or disrespectful.

Valiyev added that Azerbaijan’s principal state attributes are the national flag, the state emblem and the national anthem.

They are protected not because they are physically untouchable, he said, but because they carry a special legal status and significant public value.

The growing debate has once again raised the question of where the line should be drawn between patriotic use, commercial branding and disrespect toward state symbols.
