A passenger allegedly took a Baku taxi driver’s phone and used it to trick people in the driver’s contact list into transferring a total of about 2,300 manats ($1,350).
The incident occurred in the Bina settlement of Baku’s Khazar district.
Taxi driver Azer Mehdiyev said the suspect had previously used his services several times and gradually gained his trust.
During their latest encounter, the passenger asked to borrow Mehdiyev’s phone to make a call. The driver handed over the device and began cleaning the interior of his car. A short time later, he realized that the man had disappeared with the phone.
According to Mehdiyev, the suspect accessed his contacts and sent messages asking for urgent money transfers. Several recipients believed the requests had come from the driver and transferred a combined 2,300 manats.
Mehdiyev reported the incident to police. A man identified as Ibrahim, who is suspected of taking the phone and sending the messages, was detained.
The driver is now seeking compensation for those who transferred money after receiving the fraudulent messages.
Police are investigating the complaint. A legal assessment will be made after the inquiry is completed.
