Dairy products sold at Baku’s Green Market are now being marked with special labels identifying their origin and producer.
As AZE.US reports, the labels include the producer’s full name, the district where the product originated, the name of the product and a contact phone number.
The labels are provided to vendors free of charge and have already been placed on most dairy products displayed at the market.
Vendors say the new system has increased customer confidence by allowing shoppers to see where products came from and who produced them. Buyers have generally welcomed the initiative, although some are still unfamiliar with the purpose of the new labels.
The Azerbaijan Food Safety Agency told that inspections at food markets are conducted regularly.
Inspectors first examine documents confirming the origin of products offered for sale, veterinary and phytosanitary certificates, and information that makes it possible to trace goods from the producer to the seller.
Particular attention is paid to outlets selling animal-based products, including meat, dairy products, fish and eggs. Officials monitor storage temperatures, the condition of refrigeration equipment and compliance with cold-chain requirements.
Inspectors also assess expiration dates, packaging, labeling, storage conditions and the appearance of products.
Employees who handle food must follow personal hygiene rules and wear appropriate work clothing. Authorities also verify that workers involved in preparing and selling food have completed the required medical examinations.
The Food Safety Agency said similar measures are expected to be introduced gradually at other food markets across Azerbaijan.
