Interest in cosmetic procedures has risen sharply in recent years in Azerbaijan, with lip fillers, Botox and other aesthetic treatments becoming increasingly popular among women of different ages.
Psychologists say the trend is driven not only by a desire to look better, but also by insecurity, social pressure and beauty standards promoted on social media.
Psychologist Gular Mammadova told Medianews.az that people turn to aesthetic procedures for a variety of psychological and social reasons.
Some women seek cosmetic treatments because they are dissatisfied with their appearance or struggle with feelings of inadequacy.
In such cases, a successful procedure may boost self-confidence, improve satisfaction with one’s appearance and provide psychological comfort.
Others, however, are strongly influenced by the beauty standards created on social media. Filters, celebrities and influencers who have radically altered their appearance promote an image of the “perfect face.”
As a result, some women try to imitate someone else’s appearance rather than emphasize their own individuality.
Mammadova said some women believe cosmetic enhancements will make them more attractive, noticeable and modern. They may also expect these changes to improve their social relationships or help them attract attention from potential partners.
Over time, however, aesthetic treatments can become habitual. The effects of fillers, Botox and other cosmetic procedures gradually wear off, prompting people to undergo repeated treatments to maintain the desired appearance.
Compliments and increased attention may further encourage them to make additional changes. In some cases, cosmetic procedures stop being an occasional choice and become part of a person’s lifestyle.
The psychologist also noted that modern society increasingly favors quick results. Instead of relying on long-term methods to lose weight, change body shape or improve appearance, many people choose procedures that promise visible results within a short period, regardless of the cost.
At the same time, she stressed that cosmetic and reconstructive procedures should not be viewed in the same way in every case. Some people undergo treatment to correct congenital or acquired physical conditions, gaining both an improved appearance and greater psychological well-being.
A warning sign emerges when a person remains constantly dissatisfied, repeatedly alters different parts of the body and feels unable to stop. At that point, aesthetic procedures may no longer represent ordinary self-care and can begin to resemble a psychological dependency.
