President Donald Trump said U.S. and Iranian representatives held three hours of talks in New York on Sept. 22 as Tehran separately outlined conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.
The discussions took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Trump did not identify the participants or disclose the substance of the talks, but described the meeting as good and said he believed the sides would eventually reach an agreement.
Iran has not officially confirmed the details. Trump said any settlement must prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Terms for Reopening the Strait of Hormuz
A senior Iranian official said the country’s delegation in New York had authority to resume diplomacy. Iran is prepared to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week if the United States reduces military pressure and lifts the blockade of Iranian ports, the official said.
Tehran’s proposal to halt hostilities was conveyed to Washington through intermediaries on Sept. 16. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian does not plan to meet Trump personally.
The contacts represent the most visible diplomatic signal since the June ceasefire collapsed and indirect talks were held through Qatari and Pakistani intermediaries in July.
No agreement has been signed, but discussions about reopening the Strait of Hormuz directly affect oil supplies and global trade security.
