The United States has condemned Iran’s drone attack against Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, describing the strike as an unacceptable violation of Azerbaijani sovereignty.
In a statement released Saturday, the U.S. State Department said it strongly denounces the March 5 drone attack, which targeted Nakhchivan International Airport and a school building, injuring civilians and damaging critical infrastructure.
“The United States strongly condemns Iran’s unprovoked drone attack against the Republic of Azerbaijan on March 5, which targeted Nakhchivan International Airport and a school and resulted in injuries to innocent civilians and damage to critical civilian infrastructure,” the statement said.
Washington calls the attack unacceptable
According to the State Department, the strike represents a serious breach of Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and contributes to unnecessary escalation in the region.
The statement emphasized that attacks against the territory of U.S. partners are unacceptable.
Full solidarity with Azerbaijan
Washington also expressed firm support for Azerbaijan in the face of security threats.
“The United States stands in full solidarity with Azerbaijan against these threats. Attacks on the territory of our partners in the region are unacceptable and will be met with the United States’ resolute support for those partners,” the State Department said.
The drone strike earlier this week targeted areas in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, where civilian infrastructure – including facilities near the international airport and a school – sustained damage.
Azerbaijan welcomes Washington’s position
Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the U.S. statement and expressed appreciation for Washington’s support.
According to the ministry, the U.S. position reflects the spirit of the Charter on Strategic Partnership between Azerbaijan and the United States, signed on February 10, 2026.
“We highly appreciate the statement by the U.S. State Department condemning Iranian drone attacks on Azerbaijan’s territory and expressing solidarity with our country,” the ministry said in a statement, according to Report.
“In this tense period, many countries have demonstrated support and solidarity with Azerbaijan, and we are grateful to all of them. Naturally, the support expressed by the United States – the most influential country in the world – carries special significance for Azerbaijan,” the statement added.
The ministry also thanked Washington for what it described as a principled position in response to the attacks.
The incident has further heightened tensions in the region and drawn international attention to the security situation along Azerbaijan’s borders.
