A 17-year-old Azerbaijani kickboxing champion has drowned in the Kura River after reportedly jumping into the water to save her brother.

Gulnaz Mammadova, a resident of Ganja, disappeared on the evening of August 9 near the Yenikend settlement in Azerbaijan’s Samukh district.

Divers from the Ministry of Emergency Situations were dispatched to the area. Mammadova’s body was recovered shortly before dawn and handed over to the relevant authorities.

According to her relatives, the teenager had traveled to the river with her family. Believing that her brother was drowning, she entered the water to rescue him but was unable to return to shore.

Mammadova had won several kickboxing competitions. Most recently, she earned a gold medal at Azerbaijan’s 30th national kickboxing championship in Ganja.
