Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has thanked Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian for his “kind and sincere words” about Azerbaijan and its assistance to Iran during the recent conflict.

“Mr. President Masoud Pezeshkian, I thank you for your kind and sincere words about Azerbaijan,” Aliyev wrote on X.

“The peoples of Azerbaijan and Iran have always stood by each other in difficult times. Recent events in our region have once again demonstrated that Azerbaijan stands with the brotherly people of Iran.”

Aliyev’s remarks followed Pezeshkian’s statement that Azerbaijan had provided Iran with significant assistance in several areas during the war.

According to the Iranian president, Azerbaijan initially closed transportation routes and suspended the operations of an Iranian bank. However, the restrictions were lifted after a telephone conversation lasting about two hours.

“The bank, the embassy and the routes – everything was reopened,” Pezeshkian said.

“During the war, they provided us with significant assistance in various areas. Whether it involved supplies from Russia or their own supplies, they accompanied us and helped us with everything we needed.”
