Authorities are investigating the death of a 24-year-old pregnant woman in Baku amid conflicting reports about where she died and whether she had undergone an abortion.
The woman, identified as Tovuz resident Lala Guliyeva, was about five months pregnant, according to Baku TV.
Unconfirmed reports circulating on social media claim that doctors discovered a fetal abnormality during an examination and that Guliyeva subsequently decided to terminate the pregnancy. The reports allege that she suffered severe bleeding following the procedure and later died.
However, that account has not been officially confirmed.
Azerbaijan’s Management Union of Medical Territorial Units, known as TƏBİB, and Baku City Clinical Hospital No. 3 said the woman was brought to the hospital without signs of life on the evening of Aug. 20. Her body was sent for a forensic examination.
Hospital officials therefore rejected initial reports that Guliyeva died at the Sabunchu Medical Center.
It remains unclear where any medical procedure may have been performed and what directly caused her death. Law enforcement agencies and other relevant authorities had not released further details as of publication.
The circumstances of the case and the official cause of death are expected to be determined through a forensic examination and investigation.
