Azerbaijan imported nearly 86 million live insects in the first eight months of 2026, with a total customs value of about 242,400 manats ($142,610), according to official statistics.
The insects are used in agriculture for biological pest control, plant pollination and improving crop yields, Vesti Baku reported.
Shipments came from Russia, Morocco, Belgium, Turkey and the Netherlands, with Russia accounting for most of the imported insects.
Alternative to Chemical Pest Control
Agricultural expert Allahverdi Mustafayev said demand for beneficial insects reflects efforts to reduce reliance on chemical crop-protection products. Biological agents can control pest populations while reducing the chemical burden on soil and crops.
One application involves natural enemies of the brown marmorated stink bug, an invasive pest that damages a wide range of agricultural crops. Azerbaijan also produces trichogramma wasps to control pests including the cotton bollworm.
Imports Under Veterinary and Phytosanitary Controls
Azerbaijan’s Food Safety Agency said imported insects are used for biological plant protection, pollination and increased agricultural productivity.
Authorities inspect the insects’ origin, intended use and accompanying documents. The imports are subject to veterinary and phytosanitary controls as well as required laboratory testing.
