EV Transition Unlikely to Crash Azerbaijan Used-Car Prices, Experts Say

Azerbaijan’s gradual transition toward electric vehicles is unlikely to cause a sudden drop in prices for used gasoline and diesel cars, according to an automobile importer and an economist.

Importer Eldar Aliyev and economist Khalid Kerimli discussed whether the country’s long-term push for cleaner transportation could force owners to sell internal-combustion vehicles at steep discounts.

Aliyev, who has worked in vehicle imports for years, said demand for gasoline, diesel and hybrid models remains strong. He estimated that 70% to 80% of buyers still prefer those vehicles.

Rather than falling, prices for some used gasoline and diesel cars have risen by about 5% to 10%, Aliyev said. His estimate reflects his observations as a market participant and is not official nationwide price data.

Fleet Change Expected to Be Gradual

Kerimli also said announcements about a future shift toward electric vehicles would not, by themselves, cause a sharp decline in the secondary market. He expects the vehicle fleet to change gradually as older cars age and consumers buy newer models.

Interest in electric vehicles and other modern cars is likely to keep growing as Azerbaijan pursues a long-term low-carbon development strategy, Kerimli said.

Separate data from Azerbaijan’s AQP Automobile Index showed no broad price collapse in September 2026. Its fixed basket of nine mass-market models rose 1.1% from the previous month, while changes in the mix of listings pushed the raw median higher.

The forecasts describe overall market direction and do not guarantee that any individual vehicle will retain its value.
