The Cultural Diplomacy and Development Foundation (CDDF), in partnership with the U.S.-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce, successfully hosted a distinguished cultural diplomacy event titled “Fostering Cultural Bridges: Women and the Art of Diplomacy” in Washington, D.C.
The event brought together more than 75 international experts, diplomats, academics, policymakers, and civil society leaders for an evening dedicated to dialogue, cultural exchange, and the promotion of peace through the power of culture and women’s leadership.
Held at the U.S.-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce in Georgetown, the gathering highlighted the growing importance of cultural diplomacy as a tool for strengthening international understanding and cooperation, particularly during a time of heightened geopolitical tensions.
Opening the event, Leyla Mammadli, Founder and Executive Director of CDDF, emphasized the significance of cultural dialogue in today’s global environment.

“In these challenging times, particularly with rising tensions across different regions of the world, cultural diplomacy provides a powerful platform for dialogue, understanding, and cooperation. Women play a vital role in shaping diplomacy, peacebuilding, and the cultural narratives that connect societies,” Mammadli noted.

The program featured distinguished speakers who shared perspectives on the intersection of diplomacy, culture, and women’s leadership.
Featured speakers included:
- Vusala Mehdiyeva, Counsellor, Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United States
- Zebunessa, Peace Ambassador and advocate for women’s leadership and cross-cultural dialogue
- Dr. Paul Michael Taylor, Director of the Asian Cultural History Program at the Smithsonian Institution, who spoke on the role of cultural heritage and expression in diplomacy and global dialogue

Speakers emphasized that culture, art, and education remain essential instruments for building trust between nations and empowering women to take active roles in diplomatic and peacebuilding processes.

A highlight of the evening was the premiere of a special art exhibition by artist Nubar A. Azimova, whose work explores themes of identity, resilience, and women’s empowerment. The exhibition demonstrated how art can serve as a universal language that transcends borders and fosters mutual understanding.

The event concluded with a live piano performance and a reception, allowing participants to continue discussions and strengthen professional and cultural connections.

By convening leaders from diplomatic missions, international organizations, academia, and civil society, the event reaffirmed the importance of cultural diplomacy as a bridge between nations and a pathway toward peaceful cooperation.
