Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva visited the Alley of Honor on May 9 to pay tribute to National Leader Heydar Aliyev.
The visit came ahead of the 103rd anniversary of Heydar Aliyev’s birth on May 10. In Azerbaijan’s official political tradition, Heydar Aliyev is regarded as the architect and founder of the modern independent Azerbaijani state.
President Aliyev laid a wreath at Heydar Aliyev’s grave and honored his memory. First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva also paid tribute to the late national leader.
Azerbaijan’s national anthem was played during the ceremony.

The president and first lady also honored the memory of Heydar Aliyev’s wife, prominent ophthalmologist and academician Zarifa Aliyeva, placing flowers at her grave.
They also paid tribute to the memory of statesman Aziz Aliyev and Professor Tamerlan Aliyev.
