Demand for psychological support is rising in Azerbaijan, but finding a qualified specialist is becoming increasingly difficult as more people promote themselves as psychologists on social media without clear professional credentials.
According to Vesti Baku, residents say the quality of services varies widely, while consultation fees remain unaffordable for many families.
A single session may cost between 50 and 100 manats, or approximately $29 to $59. In one case, a client was reportedly quoted 175 manats, about $103, for a consultation lasting just 35 minutes.
Some residents said they struggle to determine whether a psychologist is genuinely qualified or simply good at promoting services online.
“Today, almost anyone can call themselves a psychologist and advertise on social media,” one resident said.
Experts advise clients to check a specialist’s university education, professional training and area of specialization before booking an appointment. A psychology degree alone does not mean a person is qualified to work with every type of mental health problem.
They also stress that the advice given during consultations can have a significant impact on a client’s emotional condition and personal decisions.
The sector’s main problem, experts say, is the absence of clearly defined professional standards and standardized methods. Universities that train psychologists should also review whether their programs provide sufficient practical preparation.
Specialists are additionally calling for psychological services to be included in Azerbaijan’s medical insurance system. Such a move could make therapy more accessible to people who need support but cannot afford private consultations.
Experts also say psychological care should not remain concentrated in Baku and must be expanded to Azerbaijan’s regions.
