Azerbaijan Academy to Consider Expelling Ramiz Mehdiyev After Verdict

BAKU - The Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences plans to convene a meeting to consider removing former Presidential Administration chief Ramiz Mehdiyev from its full membership following his court verdict.

ANAS President Isa Habibbayli said Mehdiyev could no longer remain a full member because of his actions, according to APA.

“We will take the necessary decision,” Habibbayli said, adding that the academy would call a meeting on the matter in the near future.

No meeting date has been announced, and the academy has not yet adopted a final decision. The statement marks the start of the formal process rather than Mehdiyev’s completed removal.

Earlier on Oct. 27, the Baku Court on Grave Crimes sentenced Mehdiyev to 14 years in prison but suspended the term under Article 70 of Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code after considering his age and health. The court also ordered the confiscation of his property and requested a review of whether he should be stripped of state awards.

Mehdiyev headed Azerbaijan’s Presidential Administration from 1995 to 2019 and served as president of ANAS from 2019 to 2022.
