Meat prices have increased again at markets across Baku, with shoppers reporting that beef has become about 1 manat more expensive over the past two days.
Beef that previously sold for 17–17.50 manats per kilogram now costs between 18 and 18.50 manats, or approximately $10.60–$10.90. Lamb prices have risen from 21–22 manats to as much as 23 manats, or about $13.50 per kilogram, based on the official exchange rate.
Sellers said the increase was not caused solely by developments over the past two days. Instead, it reflects higher livestock purchase prices that have been building for several months.
The live-weight price of cattle has reportedly increased from about 6 manats to 6.50 manats per kilogram. Live sheep and lamb prices, previously ranging from 9 to 10 manats, have risen to between 10 and 11 manats.
Vendors attributed the increase to higher feed and hay costs, which have made raising livestock more expensive.
Economist Khalid Karimli said the main factors were a decline in livestock numbers and growing demand for meat. According to him, meat consumption in Azerbaijan has increased by approximately 25% over the past decade.
Shrinking pastureland and the declining profitability of livestock farming are also limiting supply. As a result, both stronger demand and reduced production are pushing retail prices higher.
