BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct. 19 - The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has called on Armenia to remove remaining legal and political obstacles to signing a peace agreement with Azerbaijan, according to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry.

The appeal was included in the Baghdad Declaration adopted after the 52nd session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, held in Iraq on Oct. 17-18, according to reports by APA and Report. Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev led Azerbaijan’s delegation.

The declaration welcomed progress in the normalization of relations between Baku and Yerevan, including the initialing of an agreement on peace and the establishment of interstate relations. The OIC’s appeal concerns the next step - signing the document - and does not describe the peace treaty as already concluded.

Four Resolutions and Support for Demining

The council also readopted four updated resolutions concerning Azerbaijan. They address the consequences of the conflict with Armenia, economic assistance, the protection of Islamic historical and cultural heritage in Azerbaijani territories, and solidarity with the victims of the 1992 Khojaly tragedy.

According to the Foreign Ministry account, the Baghdad Declaration also voiced support for the reconstruction of territories restored to Azerbaijani control and urged OIC member states to provide greater assistance with demining.

The final document therefore combines support for the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process with a call for Yerevan to clear the remaining obstacles to its completion.
