Azerbaijani Media Speculate on Ramiz Mehdiyev’s Future Burial Site

Must read

Azerbaijani media have begun speculating about where former presidential administration chief Ramiz Mehdiyev might eventually be buried, but no decision by Mehdiyev or his family has been confirmed.

Modern.az named three possible sites: Yasamal Cemetery, commonly known as Gurd Gapisi; a cemetery in Novkhani; and a cemetery in Badamdar.

The outlet linked its suggestions to properties that Azerbaijani media have attributed to the former official. It remains unclear where Mehdiyev and his family currently live, and the proximity of a reported property to a cemetery does not establish any burial plan.

Three Locations Named Without Confirmation

Modern.az connected Yasamal Cemetery to reports about a villa on Tbilisi Avenue, Novkhani Cemetery to a country residence and Badamdar Cemetery to claims about an apartment near the Botanical Garden.

The publication also asserted that Mehdiyev would not be buried in Baku’s First Alley of Honor. No official decision or family statement confirming that claim was cited.

Suspended 14-Year Sentence

The discussion followed the completion of criminal proceedings against the former head of Azerbaijan’s Presidential Administration.

The Baku Court on Grave Crimes sentenced Mehdiyev on Oct. 22, 2026, to 14 years in prison, but ordered the sentence suspended after considering his age and health.

The judgment also ordered the special confiscation of property for the benefit of the state and called for a submission on whether Mehdiyev should be stripped of state awards.
