BAKU, Azerbaijan - State-run electricity producer AzerEnerji is building a 5.3-megawatt hydroelectric power plant on the Bargushad River in Azerbaijan’s Gubadli district, the first such facility in the district’s history.
The Eyvazli Hydroelectric Power Plant is expected to generate 15.6 million kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity annually, according to an AzerEnerji statement reported by Vesti Baku.
AzerEnerji said the project is being built under instructions from President Ilham Aliyev. A headwater intake structure designed to meet environmental standards has been completed on the Bargushad River to provide a stable water supply.
Crews have also laid a 5.3-kilometer, or 3.3-mile, diversion pipeline across difficult terrain and completed construction of the powerhouse.
Equipment Installation Underway
Workers are installing turbines, generators and enclosed switchgear operating at 10 and 35 kilovolts. The plant will be equipped with two Francis-type turbines, which are commonly used at hydroelectric facilities with a wide range of water-flow conditions.
Once completed, the facility will be connected to Azerbaijan’s unified electricity system through the 110-kilovolt Gubadli substation, which AzerEnerji built and commissioned in 2021.
Gas Savings and Lower Emissions
AzerEnerji estimates that the plant’s annual output will save about 3.5 million cubic meters of natural gas and prevent approximately 6,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
The company said construction and installation work is expected to be completed in the near future, but it did not announce a commissioning date.
