Ramiz Mehdiyev Expelled From Azerbaijan’s Academy of Sciences

Must read

The General Assembly of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences has approved the expulsion of former presidential administration chief Ramiz Mehdiyev, completing a process initiated by the academy’s presidium several days earlier.

Mehdiyev led Azerbaijan’s Presidential Administration from 1995 to 2019. His removal from the academy is a new institutional consequence of the criminal case against him.

Court Ordered Property Confiscation

Baku’s Court on Grave Crimes sentenced Mehdiyev to 14 years in prison. The sentence was suspended under Article 70 of the Criminal Code after the court took account of his age and health.

The court also ordered his property confiscated by the state and referred the question of revoking his state awards for consideration.

The criminal case was opened in 2025. Mehdiyev was accused of laundering criminally obtained property, treason and actions aimed at seizing power by force or changing the constitutional order.

The General Assembly’s vote confirms the presidium’s earlier decision through the academy’s highest collegial body.
