A Baku resident says he paid 8,600 manats, or about $5,060, after seeing a car advertisement on TikTok but later lost the ability to use the vehicle when a power of attorney was revoked twice.
Rashad Aliyev described the dispute in a television report. He said he planned to use the car for taxi work to support his family and sold his previous vehicle to finance the transaction.
Aliyev said he visited an office on Ahmad Rajabli Street in Baku’s Narimanov district, paid the money and signed an agreement. The terms called for an initial payment of 8,600 manats and monthly payments of 430 manats, or about $253.
Power of Attorney Revoked Twice
Aliyev said he was promised the car within two days, but delivery was delayed. After repeated requests, he said, he was offered another vehicle on different terms.
He received the car under a power of attorney, but the authorization ended several days later. Aliyev said he then learned that the vehicle belonged to another person.
The power of attorney was issued again after he complained, but was revoked for a second time about 10 days later, according to his account. He said he could no longer drive or work and had accumulated bank debts, with unpaid loans eventually leading to court proceedings.
Aliyev alleged that the people who received his money stopped answering calls and that the office and TikTok accounts closed. He also said he encountered other people with similar complaints. One person heard in a telephone conversation included in the report denied selling the vehicle.
Police Investigation Continues
Aliyev said he submitted the agreement and a complaint to the Narimanov District Police Department.
Interior Ministry spokesman Elbrus Ibrahimov said police had received a complaint about suspected fraud in the district and that investigative work was continuing. No individual was found guilty in the television report.
