An armed border intruder was neutralized after opening fire on Azerbaijani personnel near the country’s border with Iran, Azerbaijan’s State Border Service said.

The agency said a patrol operating in the area covered by the Gotapa border detachment observed a group moving from Iran toward Azerbaijani territory, according to Vesti Baku.

The border post was placed on alert, the area was sealed off and officers pursued the group after ordering them to stop. Warning shots were fired into the air, the service said.

According to the agency, one of the people being pursued ignored the order and opened fire, threatening the lives of the border guards. Officers then used their weapons under Azerbaijan’s law on the state border and neutralized the intruder.

The person’s identity, citizenship and suspected purpose have not been disclosed.

Azerbaijani authorities notified Iran through border-representative channels. A criminal case has been opened, and the State Border Service and Military Prosecutor’s Office are jointly conducting operational and investigative measures.
