The father of Azerbaijani opposition politician Ali Karimli has died, local media reported.
According to Vesti Baku, Karimli’s father, Amirhuseyn Karimov, passed away. His body is expected to be buried in the Saatli district, where he was born.
Karimli, the chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, is currently in detention.
He was detained by the State Security Service on Nov. 29 last year. A court in Baku’s Sabail district later ordered his arrest as a pretrial measure. In February, the detention period was extended for another four months.
Karimli has been charged under Article 278.1 of Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code, which concerns actions aimed at the forcible seizure of power or the forcible change of the constitutional order.
The case is linked to the criminal proceedings involving Ramiz Mehdiyev, the former head of Azerbaijan’s Presidential Administration and an academician.
