A Duolingo lesson referring to same-sex marriage was raised during a joint committee meeting in Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis.
Sevinj Abdullayeva, head of the Public Association for Support of Women’s and Children’s Education, said her son had encountered an English-language sentence on the platform stating that a man could marry either a woman or another man.
She made the remarks during discussions on proposed amendments to Azerbaijan’s law on information, informatization and data protection.
“Duolingo is a foreign platform used by both children and adults to learn languages,” Abdullayeva said. “Recently, while my son was using it, he saw a sentence in English saying that, as a man, you can marry not only a woman but also a man.”
Abdullayeva described such content as harmful to children and said similar examples were widespread across online platforms.
She argued that age restrictions alone may not be enough because some social media and educational services can be accessed without registration.
Abdullayeva called for more videos, articles and social media posts promoting traditional family values and said such content should be produced systematically.
The discussion took place at a joint meeting of the parliamentary committees on human rights, family, women and children, and legal policy and state-building.
