Two people with identical salaries may receive substantially different loan offers from Azerbaijani banks. The same customer can also be approved for different credit limits depending on the financial institution.

Banks do not determine the maximum loan amount based solely on a borrower’s salary, according to banking expert Ismayil Mammadov. Instead, they assess a broader set of financial and employment factors.

The first consideration is the customer’s officially documented and stable income. Higher verified earnings generally allow a bank to approve a larger loan.

Credit history is another key factor. Previous or active payment delays may result in a rejected application. In other cases, the bank may offer a smaller amount or charge a higher interest rate to compensate for the additional risk.

Banks also examine a customer’s existing debts and total monthly payment burden. Even a person with a relatively high salary may receive a low limit if a significant share of their income is already being used to repay other loans.

Collateral can also affect the decision. Banks may accept real estate, vehicles, other movable property or gold jewelry as security. Collateral reduces the lender’s risk and may allow the borrower to qualify for a larger amount.

Other factors include the applicant’s length of employment, the stability of the employer, the consistency of income and the customer’s previous relationship with the bank.

A person who has used the same bank for an extended period and consistently met financial obligations may have a better chance of receiving a higher limit.

However, every bank uses its own internal risk-assessment model. As a result, loan offers for the same customer can vary considerably across financial institutions.

Mammadov stressed that a low credit limit does not always indicate a poor credit history. It may be linked to a short employment record, unstable income, existing debt or the bank’s internal lending restrictions.

The goal of the assessment is to reduce risk for the bank while preventing customers from taking on debt beyond their ability to repay.

Borrowers seeking higher limits are advised to make payments on time, avoid overdue debt and formally document all sources of income.
