Azerbaijan recorded 15,107 marriages and 8,087 divorces during the first five months of 2026, according to the latest figures from the State Statistics Committee.
The divorce rate declined slightly compared with the same period of 2025, falling from 2.0 to 1.9 cases per 1,000 residents.
However, the marriage rate dropped much more sharply, from 4.7 to 3.6 per 1,000 residents. The figures suggest that while fewer couples are divorcing, Azerbaijanis are also becoming increasingly reluctant to marry.
That makes it premature to describe the latest data as evidence that the country’s family crisis is ending. The decline in divorces is modest and comes alongside a considerably steeper fall in new marriages.
Residents interviewed by local media cited a lack of mutual understanding, unwillingness to compromise, interference from relatives and marriages entered into without strong emotional bonds among the most common reasons families break apart.
Azerbaijan has expanded public awareness programs aimed at strengthening families and preparing young people for married life. These efforts include social campaigns, educational materials and professional training for specialists working with families and children.
Experts say stronger family education may help reduce future divorces, but the falling marriage rate points to a broader demographic and social challenge that cannot be measured by divorce statistics alone.
