Interest in German cars remains strong in Azerbaijan, but purchasing patterns are changing. More drivers are choosing Chinese models that offer modern equipment, hybrid technology and attractive designs at substantially lower prices.
Participants in the Autocast program offered differing assessments of the market. Some said demand for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Volkswagen has declined. Others argued that interest in German brands remains stable and that the rapid growth of Chinese vehicles reflects a broader expansion of supply, including their widespread use in taxi fleets.
More Equipment for Less Money
Experts identified price as the main advantage of Chinese vehicles. A well-equipped Chinese sedan or crossover can cost two or three times less than a comparable European model.
For 50,000-100,000 manats, or approximately $29,400-$58,800, buyers can obtain a new vehicle with a large display, driver-assistance systems, a modern interior and either a hybrid or fully electric powertrain. A European vehicle with similar equipment typically costs considerably more.
This price-to-equipment ratio, rather than a disappearance of enthusiasm for German brands, is pushing many buyers to reconsider their choices. Azerbaijani drivers still value BMW for handling, Mercedes-Benz for comfort and Audi for technology and design.
The Premium Segment Remains Resilient
Industry specialists do not see a sharp fall in demand for premium German cars. Buyers of high-end BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi models often consider image, performance and driving habits alongside practicality.
The most significant changes are occurring in the mass market. A buyer seeking a daily vehicle increasingly compares a used German model with a new Chinese crossover.
In that comparison, the Chinese vehicle benefits from a factory warranty, lower operating costs and a richer standard specification. German cars continue to appeal to buyers who prioritize driving characteristics and are prepared to pay more for maintenance.
Used German Cars Arrive From the United States and Korea
Another notable shift is the decline in vehicles imported directly from Germany. The German market was once one of the principal sources of used cars for Azerbaijan. Today, many BMW, Mercedes-Benz and other European models enter the country from the United States and South Korea.
According to automotive service specialists, vehicles imported from Korea are more likely to arrive in sound technical condition. Cars brought from the United States are often accident-damaged because traders can purchase them cheaply, repair them in Azerbaijan and resell them.
Buyers considering such vehicles should verify accident records, repair quality and the condition of safety systems. An unusually attractive price may reflect serious damage sustained before the car was imported.
A Used BMW or a New Chinese Crossover?
Azerbaijan’s market effectively presents buyers with two different approaches. One is to purchase a used German vehicle with a prestigious badge and established driving characteristics. The other is to choose a new Chinese model with a warranty, an economical powertrain and up-to-date features.
Supporters of German brands argue that BMW and Mercedes-Benz retain their value more effectively. Autocast participants noted, however, that new German cars also depreciate substantially after leaving the showroom.
Depreciation can be more pronounced for some Chinese models because manufacturers update their lineups quickly, dealers offer frequent discounts and demand in the secondhand market remains less predictable.
Maintenance Is Becoming a Deciding Factor
The purchase price of a used premium car represents only part of its cost. Modern German vehicles use complex engines, turbochargers, electronic systems and expensive suspension components.
Service specialists said many owners choose aftermarket parts because original components are costly. These alternatives are cheaper but generally have a shorter service life.
As a result, an affordable used BMW or Mercedes-Benz can generate significant repair expenses within months of purchase. For many drivers, a new Chinese car covered by a warranty offers more predictable ownership costs.
German Brands Remain Strong but Face Growing Pressure
Chinese manufacturers have not displaced German brands in Azerbaijan. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Volkswagen retain loyal customers and strong positions, particularly among enthusiasts of premium and performance-oriented vehicles.
The direction of the market has nevertheless shifted. Price, fuel economy, warranty coverage and equipment levels are becoming more important to mass-market buyers than a brand’s history.
Demand for German vehicles is therefore not disappearing, but sales are being redistributed. Many buyers may still prefer BMW or Mercedes-Benz emotionally, yet their final decision is increasingly determined by budget.
