BAKU, Azerbaijan - Azerbaijan had 151,000 working pensioners as of October 2026, including 107,000 people over 65 who receive an old-age pension, according to figures cited from the State Social Protection Fund.
Some pensioners continue working because they need additional income, while others choose to stay in their profession as long as their health allows, according to a Vesti Baku report based on a televised survey.
One woman interviewed for the report said she receives a monthly pension of 450 manats, continues earning a salary and helps support her grandchildren.
Formal employment after retirement allows a worker to receive a salary while continuing to accumulate pension capital. That additional capital is taken into account when the pension is recalculated.
How the Six-Year Recalculation Works
Lawmaker Vugar Bayramov said pension capital accumulated after an old-age pension is awarded is divided by 72 during the six-year recalculation. The resulting amount is added to the retiree’s monthly payment.
The State Social Protection Fund said pensions for working recipients of old-age pensions are recalculated every six years or when the person stops working. The calculation uses pension capital recorded in the person’s individual account.
The Labor and Social Protection Ministry’s official guidance says the recalculation is performed automatically after six years of post-retirement employment, without requiring a separate application. Its guidance also confirms that accumulated capital is divided by 72 and added to the existing pension.
Different rules apply to working recipients of disability pensions. Their pensions are recalculated after they leave employment and become nonworking pensioners, according to the fund. Azerbaijan’s DOST Agency provides the same distinction in its pension-service guidance.
For all contributions to count, the employment relationship must be formally registered and the full salary must be declared. Pay received off the books does not generate corresponding pension capital.
The original television report includes the survey and the explanation of the recalculation rules.
