Azerbaijan’s reconstructed Shirvan Irrigation Canal is expected to bring another 105,950 hectares into agricultural use, with the project scheduled for completion in 2027.

The 204-kilometer canal is being rebuilt in four stages. Construction and installation work is 83% complete in the first stage, 56% in the second, 49% in the third and 60% in the fourth.

Excavation has been completed along 134 kilometers of the route, while 113 kilometers have received concrete lining. Finishing work is underway on 110 of the 171 planned hydraulic structures.

Ten Districts to Receive Improved Irrigation

The canal is designed for a maximum flow of 180 cubic meters of water per second. The project is intended to improve water supplies for farmland in the Yevlakh, Aghdash, Goychay, Kurdamir, Ujar, Aghsu, Zardab, Ismayilli, Shamakhi and Hajigabul districts.

Akif Guliyev, an official with Azerbaijan’s State Water Resources Agency, said farmers would be offered modern irrigation systems. The agency estimates that such systems can save at least 40% to 50% of water and produce yields more than twice as high as traditional methods.
