Azerbaijan has signed the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Convention on cooperation among anti-corruption law enforcement agencies of Organization of Islamic Cooperation member states, officials said.
Prosecutor General Kamran Aliyev said the document was signed during the third ministerial meeting of OIC anti-corruption law enforcement authorities, held in Baku on Oct. 27-28.
The convention provides a legal framework for cooperation among competent agencies, including information exchange and coordination in cross-border corruption cases.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation said Azerbaijan and Tajikistan signed the convention on the sidelines of the Baku meeting. OIC Secretary-General Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed witnessed the signing.
Ratification Still Required
Aliyev described Azerbaijan as having joined the convention but said the document still must be ratified before its provisions are implemented in Azerbaijani law.
He said Azerbaijan had participated in preparing the convention and in the two previous high-level meetings. He also linked the signing to Azerbaijan’s upcoming chairmanship in this OIC cooperation format.
