How old is too old to drive in Azerbaijan?

Azerbaijan does not set a maximum age for obtaining or renewing a driver’s license, according to lawyer Akram Hasanov.

Hasanov said older drivers cannot be denied a license solely because of their age. The main requirement is whether they are physically and mentally fit to operate a vehicle safely.

“There is no upper age limit under the law,” Hasanov said. “The key criterion is the driver’s health.”

Drivers seeking to renew an expired license must undergo a medical examination. Doctors assess factors including eyesight, reaction time and general health before deciding whether the person is fit to drive.

A positive medical opinion allows the applicant to renew the license and continue driving regardless of age, Hasanov said.

This means people in Azerbaijan may legally drive in their 70s, 80s or later, provided they meet the required medical standards.

Older drivers whose licenses have expired must first obtain the necessary medical certificate and then apply to the relevant registration and examination department.

Age alone is not grounds for refusing a license. A medical condition that makes driving unsafe, however, can prevent a person from receiving or renewing one.
