Imports of hybrid and electric vehicles to Azerbaijan have fallen sharply after the expiration of customs benefits for such cars.

State Customs Committee Chairman Shahin Baghirov said in an interview with İTV and Report that the previous exemptions for hybrid and electric vehicles are no longer in force, and customs payments are now being collected.

According to Baghirov, more than 68,000 hybrid cars were imported into Azerbaijan in 2025. Most of them were vehicles manufactured within the previous three years and with engines of up to 2,540 cubic centimeters.

Around 2,000 electric vehicles were also imported into the country last year.

However, in the first five months of this year, imports of these vehicles fell by about half compared with the same period of the previous year.

Baghirov said the decline was linked both to the removal of customs benefits and to the fact that many citizens had already imported vehicles in 2025 while the previous preferential rules were still in effect.

Despite the drop in the number of imported vehicles, more than 12 million manats in customs payments were collected during the first five months of the year.

The customs chief said the final picture in the car market would become clearer by the end of the year.
