SOCAR will begin phasing in caps on gasoline and diesel prices at Italiana Petroli stations in Italy on Sept. 28, a move covering a network of more than 4,500 service stations.
The Azerbaijani state energy company has not disclosed the exact price ceiling. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni thanked Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and SOCAR President Rovshan Najaf for the decision, saying it would help reduce costs for Italian families and strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
SOCAR said the cap would first be introduced at stations operating under the IP brand. It is also examining whether to extend the mechanism to Esso outlets and independent operators supplied by Italiana Petroli.
IP Ceiling Has Not Been Announced
The level and duration of the IP cap have not yet been made public. The company said the terms must take account of the sustainability of a supply chain involving thousands of operators.
For comparison, Eni set a 30-day maximum beginning Sept. 28 of €1.99 per liter for gasoline and €2.19 for diesel. Average Italian pump prices on Sept. 27 were €2.159 per liter for gasoline and €2.377 for diesel, according to Industry Ministry data cited by the Italian automotive publication Quattroruote.
Eni’s announced ceiling is therefore about 17 to 19 euro cents per liter below the average. The effect of SOCAR’s decision will become clear after IP publishes its prices.
SOCAR Expands in Italy
SOCAR completed its acquisition of Italiana Petroli from Api Holding on May 8, 2026. The price-cap plan follows an Italian government appeal for support for households and businesses facing more than six months of elevated fuel costs linked to geopolitical instability and supply disruptions.
