BAKU, Azerbaijan - Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev does not have an official TikTok account, and users are being urged to verify videos and quotations attributed to him before sharing them.
The president’s official social-media presence is limited to accounts linked from president.az, including X, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
A video showing Aliyev is not, by itself, proof that a post is authentic. Account names, profile photographs and follower counts also do not establish that a page belongs to the president or his press service.
2020 Speech Presented as New Statement
The warning followed the circulation of an edited TikTok video that used footage of Aliyev and part of a speech delivered on Nov. 10, 2020.
Some posts presented the clip as a current message to Turkey, although the remarks concerned the outcome of the 2020 war, Armenia’s defeat and the trilateral statement signed that year.
Removing the date and original context created the false impression that Aliyev had issued a new statement.
Where to Verify Posts
Aliyev’s official accounts include azpresident on X, presidentaz on Instagram, PresidentIlhamAliyev on Facebook and @presidentaz on YouTube.
Advances in video editing and artificial intelligence make it increasingly easy to imitate a person’s voice or attach words to footage that the speaker never said. Users should compare viral clips and quotations with the presidential website and the official accounts listed there.
