Why Fish Prices Are Rising In Baku Ahead Of Novruz

Fish prices at markets in Baku have increased in recent days as demand rises ahead of the Novruz holiday, when fish is traditionally included in festive meals.

One of the most noticeable price jumps has been for kutum, a popular fish often served during the holiday season. The price for one kilogram has risen from around 15 manats ($9) to approximately 25 manats ($15).

Other types of fish have also become more expensive compared with previous weeks, according to vendors at local fish markets.

Sellers say the increase is linked to several factors, including reduced supply of certain sea fish and logistical challenges in transportation.

“Some types of fish are harder to bring to the market now, and supply has decreased. Naturally, prices go up,” one vendor said.

Experts also point to regional developments affecting production and exports in neighboring countries, which have limited the amount of fish reaching Azerbaijan’s markets.

As a result, consumers in Baku are seeing higher prices for imported and sea fish varieties.

However, analysts say the current price surge may be temporary. Once the Novruz holiday passes and demand returns to normal levels, fish prices could partially decline.
