U.S. President Donald Trump said Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev described the progress made with Armenia over six months as a “miracle” and credited the American leader’s personal involvement.
Trump made the remarks while addressing the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, citing the Azerbaijan-Armenia settlement among the international conflicts he says his administration helped resolve.
“The president of Azerbaijan told me that it took President Trump six months to perform a miracle. Nobody thought it was possible,” Trump said, according to Azerbaijani news agencies.
Trump also said Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had told him that the breakthrough would not have been possible without the U.S. president’s direct involvement.
South Caucasus on Washington’s Agenda
The reference to Azerbaijan and Armenia in Trump’s U.N. address underscores Washington’s effort to present its South Caucasus diplomacy as a major foreign-policy achievement.
Trump’s statements about Aliyev and Pashinyan were his account of their remarks. He did not announce any newly signed documents or a timetable for the next steps in the peace process during this portion of the speech.
