Turkey and the United States intend to use their bilateral partnership to support the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia and promote stability in the South Caucasus, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said.
Fidan made the remarks at a panel titled “Turkish-American Relations on the Threshold of a Century” in New York. He said cooperation between Ankara and Washington should help deliver peace and security in nearby regions, citing the process between Baku and Yerevan.
Black Sea and Ukraine
Fidan also said Turkey was seeking to reduce the risk of escalation in the Black Sea and protect navigation. Ankara maintains contact with both Kyiv and Moscow and supports a diplomatic settlement to the war in Ukraine, he said.
The Black Sea should be a region of cooperation rather than crisis, Fidan said, adding that regional resilience depends on legitimate institutions, responsible policies and economic opportunity.
His remarks did not announce a new South Caucasus agreement but indicated that Ankara views coordination with Washington as a tool for supporting the regional peace process.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was expected to address the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on Sept. 22.
