Nakhchivan is expected to become Azerbaijan’s second region powered entirely by renewable energy, with surplus electricity sent to other parts of the country or exported.
Deputy Energy Minister Elnur Soltanov announced the plan at the Second Azerbaijan International Investment Forum, according to Vesti Baku.
Soltanov said Nakhchivan’s transition to 100% renewable electricity is expected in the foreseeable future. Karabakh and East Zangezur are set to become the first Azerbaijani regions fully supplied by green energy.
Once local demand is met, the remaining electricity could be transmitted to other parts of Azerbaijan or exported. The country is developing four international green-energy corridors to support those flows.
The planned routes include the Caspian-Black Sea-Europe corridor; Azerbaijan-Nakhchivan-Turkey-Bulgaria; Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey-Europe; and a future connection between Azerbaijan and Central Asia.
The Energy Ministry expects the projects to help cover domestic demand while expanding Azerbaijan’s renewable-electricity exports.
