BP completed intervention work on seven subsea wells at Deepwater Gunashli about one month ahead of schedule, using riserless light-well intervention technology in its Caspian operations for the first time.
The campaign on the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli block began in October 2025 and covered seven subsea wells that were difficult to access through conventional methods.
Russell Morris, BP’s vice president for wells in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, said the work improved monitoring and reservoir-pressure management while helping the company assess opportunities for additional production. BP did not disclose a possible increase in output.
Khankendi Vessel Reconfigured
The Khankendi subsea construction vessel was converted over several months for light-well intervention work. A moonpool — a protected vertical opening used to lower equipment, remotely operated vehicles and tools to the seabed — was installed and commissioned for the first time.
A central part of the project was Oceaneering’s BORIS system, which weighs about 50 metric tons. The system provides access to subsea wells without a conventional drilling rig while maintaining well control and pressure during operations.
Saipem, Oceaneering and SLB worked with BP on the campaign. For the mature Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli block, successful use of the technology broadens the options for servicing subsea infrastructure without heavier and more costly drilling equipment.
