Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said Sept. 20 that completing the peace process with Armenia should unlock regional trade, restore economic links and accelerate the integration of international transport routes.
The ministry set out its position in a statement marking Azerbaijan’s State Sovereignty Day, according to Report.az.
Baku said the restoration of Azerbaijan’s full sovereignty created a new political reality and opened opportunities to normalize relations with Armenia. The ministry described the Aug. 8, 2025, meeting of the Azerbaijani, U.S. and Armenian leaders in Washington as an important stage in that process.
Economic Benefits of a Peace Agreement
The ministry linked final normalization not only to security but also to practical economic consequences. It said renewed trade, confidence-building measures and the integration of transport and logistics routes into a unified regional system could benefit Azerbaijan, Armenia and other interested parties.
The ministry said remaining issues must be resolved before a peace agreement can be signed and relations fully normalized. The statement did not specify those issues.
Baku also listed the reconstruction of territories restored to Azerbaijani control, the return of displaced residents, the removal of land mines and clarification of the fate of missing people among its priorities.
Azerbaijan’s Account of the 2023 Operation
The statement also presented Azerbaijan’s official account of the events of Sept. 19-20, 2023.
Azerbaijan said illegal armed formations were disarmed in less than 24 hours and that strikes were directed at military targets and infrastructure, with particular attention paid to civilian safety. The ministry highlighted the role of President Ilham Aliyev and Azerbaijan’s armed forces in restoring the country’s sovereignty.
