A new diplomatic dispute has emerged between Azerbaijan and France after Paris issued a travel warning about visiting the country.

France said on September 17 that its advisory was based on an alleged risk of arbitrary detention and unfair judicial proceedings. Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry rejected that assessment the following day, according to APA.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Aykhan Hajizada described the French position as politically motivated and characterized it as interference in Azerbaijan’s judicial system.

Baku urged France to withdraw such claims, respect Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and avoid steps that could further damage bilateral relations.

The two sides are therefore publicly at odds not only over the risks faced by travelers but also over the interpretation of criminal proceedings in Azerbaijan.
