Azerbaijan has urged the UN Human Rights Council to move beyond recognizing the rights of landmine victims and establish practical mechanisms for protecting them.
Elshad Iskandarov, Azerbaijan’s ambassador-at-large, presented the proposal at a special event in Geneva during the council’s 63rd session.
He called for a new resolution setting out measures for medical and psychological rehabilitation as well as the social and economic reintegration of survivors.
Baku is building on an initiative launched in 2024. In 2025, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution addressing the impact of anti-personnel mines on human rights. Azerbaijan says the next step should move the issue from recognition toward practical assistance.
The event was organized by Azerbaijan’s Permanent Mission in Geneva, the Universal Rights Group and Algeria’s mission. Participants included representatives of Algeria, Mozambique and Uganda, as well as the UN Mine Action Service and the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining.
