A proposal to change wedding rules in Azerbaijan would limit celebrations to no more than 120 guests and two hours. No official decision has been adopted, and the idea remains under discussion, Globalinfo.az reported.
Sociologist Mail Yagub said such restrictions would be realistic and relevant for Azerbaijan, where weddings attended by 500 to 1,000 people can place a heavy financial burden on couples and their families.
According to Yagub, the high cost of traditional wedding celebrations creates additional difficulties for young people planning to marry. He argued that this burden may be one of several factors contributing to declining marriage and birth rates in the country.
“The wedding process should be made easier, and the obstacles facing young people should be removed,” Yagub said.
He added that the proposed limits could be adjusted. Weddings could be restricted to 100, 150 or 200 guests, while celebrations could last two or three hours.
Yagub also called for government involvement in reforming wedding practices, saying the current format has become excessively costly for many families.
