Azerbaijani Greco-Roman wrestler Sanan Suleymanov won his first senior world title on Oct. 25, beating Moldova’s Alexandrin Gutu 8-3 in the 77-kilogram final in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Suleymanov secured Azerbaijan’s second gold medal of the day at the 2026 World Wrestling Championships after Eldaniz Azizli captured the 55-kilogram title.
AZERTAC reported the 8-3 final score. Report also confirmed that Suleymanov defeated Gutu for gold in the 77-kilogram division.
The title marked a breakthrough for the 29-year-old, who previously won silver medals at the 2021 world championships in Oslo and the 2023 event in Belgrade. He also won the European title in 2020.
Suleymanov reached the Astana final after navigating the opening day of Greco-Roman competition. Gutu, a former world under-23 champion, earned his first senior world medal with the silver.
After the final, Suleymanov said his next goal is to become an Olympic champion.
“I had dreamed of becoming world champion for a long time,” he told journalists, according to Report. He said years of injuries and defeats had not discouraged him from continuing to pursue the title.
The World Wrestling Championships at Barys Arena began Oct. 24 and are scheduled to conclude Nov. 1.
