Azerbaijan’s Ibad Huseynov Returns After Detention in Georgia

Azerbaijani National Hero Ibad Huseynov has returned home after being detained and denied entry to Georgia, saying the Azerbaijani Embassy secured his release.

Huseynov told journalists at the airport that he contacted Azerbaijan’s embassy immediately after being detained. Diplomats intervened, and he was taken to the embassy before arrangements were made for his return, according to APA.

Huseynov said he repeatedly asked why he had been detained but received no explanation. Georgian authorities had not publicly stated the legal basis for the incident at the time of publication.

Azerbaijani media reported that Huseynov traveled to Tbilisi to attend a public event on Oct. 23 but was stopped at the airport and told he would not be admitted to the country.

Huseynov took part in the First Karabakh War and was awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan in 2020.

It remained unclear why Georgian authorities refused him entry and whether restrictions would apply to any future travel to Georgia.
