“Milk” Selling for 10 Manats per Liter Appears in Stores

Plant-based milk alternatives are now two to three times more expensive than traditional dairy in Azerbaijan, with demand remaining limited due to high prices and import dependence.

Plant-based milk alternatives priced at up to 10 manats (about $5.90) per liter are increasingly visible in major supermarkets across Azerbaijan.
Coconut, almond, soy, and banana-based drinks cost two to three times more than conventional cow, buffalo, or goat milk.

Despite the wider ассортимент, consumer demand remains noticeably lower.
Shoppers say they would like to try almond or coconut milk, but high prices are the main obstacle.

Who chooses plant-based milk

Specialists note that plant-based milk is most often preferred by:

  • people engaged in sports and fitness;

  • consumers with lactose intolerance or allergies to animal protein;

  • individuals following vegan diets.

At the same time, traditional dairy milk still contains higher levels of protein and fat, which are important for physical development and overall nutrition.

Plant-based alternatives are therefore recommended mainly for those who cannot consume animal-origin products for medical or dietary reasons.

Why prices are so high

The primary factor is import dependence.
Most plant-based milk products are brought into the country from Russia, Türkiye, and Ukraine.

Prices are also affected by:

  • more complex production processes;

  • compliance with food-safety standards;

  • specialized packaging and storage requirements.

As a result, plant-based milk in Azerbaijan costs several times more than traditional dairy.
