Residents in Azerbaijan can face fines of up to 1,000 manats for throwing bulky household items or renovation waste into regular garbage containers or leaving them nearby.

As Vesti Baku reports, old furniture, broken appliances, construction debris and other oversized waste are not considered regular household trash and cannot be disposed of in standard residential bins.

The issue is common in apartment courtyards, where residents often leave bags of renovation debris, dismantled materials and unwanted household items next to dumpsters. Specialists say that even if this is done out of convenience or ignorance, it still qualifies as a violation.

According to experts, this type of waste must be removed separately, either for recycling or for disposal at specially designated landfill or treatment sites. Regular garbage containers are intended only for everyday household waste generated by residents.

Under Article 266 of Azerbaijan’s Code of Administrative Offenses, individuals who dump waste in places not designated for that category can be fined from 700 to 1,000 manats.

The penalties are steeper for others. Officials can be fined from 3,000 to 4,000 manats, while legal entities face fines ranging from 8,500 to 10,000 manats.

Specialists also note that such violations must be formally documented by responsible local personnel. After that, an administrative protocol is drawn up and a decision on punishment is issued.

In practice, that means leaving an old sofa, broken washing machine or bags of renovation waste next to a residential dumpster is not just an eyesore. It can also lead to a serious financial penalty.
