Baku has no official places called “Montino,” “Vorovskiy” or “Razin,” Azerbaijani MP Siyavush Novruzov said during a meeting of the Milli Majlis Committee on Regional Affairs.
Novruzov said such names are still used mostly as informal city landmarks. Businesses and residents may use them to help people find a location more easily, but they are not official place names in Baku’s administrative system.
The discussion also touched on errors in older state registries, where some village names had been recorded incorrectly, sometimes with one or more wrong letters. According to the remarks made at the meeting, those mistakes later created names that no longer carried a clear toponymic meaning.
Because some of the old registries continued to be used as reference sources after Azerbaijan regained independence, the same mistakes were repeated in newer records.
Novruzov said local bodies, especially municipalities, should pay closer attention to the issue and take initiative in correcting inaccurate or distorted place names.
The debate reflects a broader gap between official geography and urban memory in Baku. Names such as “Montino,” “Vorovskiy” and “Razin” may no longer exist in formal documents, but they remain familiar to many residents as everyday reference points across the city.
